Dear Marketers, Your Free Ultimate Guide to Marketing Sucks
And no — I won’t attend your webinar
“Hi Brigitte, I came across your profile and it caught my attention because you have work experience with Content Marketing. I’m organizing a webinar with notable names in content marketing, including an up and coming author who will talk about his new book. I thought you might be interested in attending…”
This week alone, I’ve received five inMails, seven emails, and even a few phone calls from B2B marketers trying “connect” about free guides, webinars, and the possibility of “hopping on a quick call.” It’s only Monday.
These (somewhat) personalized messages all want the same thing: engagement. Clicks, downloads, RSVPs, leads…I get it, everyone’s out there hustling for the same KPIs.
Like any normal person, I ignored them.
“Just looping back on this, Brigitte. If you have any interest at all in getting a copy of this guide, I just want to remind you — it’s free!”
When did B2B marketers get this pushy with other marketers? Since my LinkedIn has a former title that contains the M word, I’m a frequent target of other marketers looking for content engagement. And I’m now cynical enough to say: Your guide/webinar/eBook/white paper almost certainly sucks.
